My last blog post discussed how you could use the upcoming quiet time over summer to get ahead in 2016 by working ON your business instead of IN your business. One of the suggested activities was to read some books by business authors. Not only will you learn some new skills that can be put into action, you will also be able to do it while lazing in your favourite chair or sunning yourself on the beach.
There are literally millions of books out there on every business topic imaginable by fantastic authors who have walked the walk. You only need to take action on one thing you read out of each book to get benefits.
Here is a list of books I will be checking out over the summer break:
The 4-hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss – If your dream is to escape the rat race that is the corporate world this book is a must read. The 4-hour Work Week will give you tips on how to work less and spend more time living. Some of the tips given include outsourcing your life, travelling the world without quitting your job, eliminating 50% of your work and working in short bursts instead of a long haul career.
The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber – This is the book everybody should read before diving into starting a business. The E-Myth illustrates the concept of working ON your business instead of IN your business and helps you to grow your business in a structured and systemised way that won’t end up breaking you in the process.
Start With Why by Simon Sinek – Based on Simon Sinek’s famous TED talk this book delves into the theory of starting with WHY you do what you do instead of what you actually do. Very few people can clearly articulate why they do what they do but the ones that do tend to be the most successful including Steve Jobs, Dr Martin Luther King and the Wright Brothers.
Key Person Of Influence by Daniel Priestley – In today’s business world just being good at what you do is no longer enough to ensure your success. To be amongst the inner circle of your industry you need to be a “key person of influence”. This book details a five-step method to help you become that key go to person in your industry. The steps include developing a perfect pitch, publishing your ideas, productising your expertise, raising your profile and developing great partnerships.
The Art of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick – These days if you are promoting any kind of product or service, social media will be where you would go to do that. This book provides a practical guide to using social media that is designed to work in the real world. The most popular social media sites are covered and include steps to build your foundation, amass your digital assets, optimise your profile, attract more followers and effectively integrate social media and blogging.
