What I Did On My Summer Holidays

We are coming very close to the end of another year. Where has the time gone? In the next couple of weeks businesses will be winding down for the holiday period and things will be very quiet for a month or so during December and January.

This period is a fantastic opportunity to work ON your business instead of IN your business. During the year things get very frantic and your time is devoted to running your business day to day and looking after your customers. It is quite rare during a busy year that you will actually get the time to reflect and take stock of where your business is at and what you want to do with it.

Examples of some things you can do include:

Business planning – As the saying goes “failing to plan is planning to fail”. This is something many business owners fail to do as they get caught up in the small details. Running your business will be so much easier if you have a road map to follow. Would you take a holiday without an itinerary to follow? Here are some fantastic resources to help you with your business planning process.

Read business books – There are literally millions of books out there on every business topic imaginable by fantastic authors who have walked the walk. You only need to take action on one thing you read out of each book to get benefits. This is a great thing to do while lying on the beach. For my next blog post I will share my summer reading list with you.

Systemise your business – It is vitally important to have a process set up for every task in your business. Once the process is established it needs to be documented and easily available to your staff. This will dramatically reduce the need for staff training and will enable the business to run without you being there. A great tool to assist with this process is Google Sites.

Update your sites – All sites including social media pages and your company website need to be regularly updated. This is a great time to do an audit of your sites to ensure they are up to date and fully optimised for SEO. You could also produce a lead magnet to put on your website such as an ebook or a checklist.

Write blog posts – Writing blog posts is a time consuming process and it is difficult to find time during the year to do it on a regular basis. You can actually write blog posts in advance and set them up to be released at regular intervals during the year. Scheduling blog posts in advance is a standard feature on blogging platforms.

Take time out – Make sure you spend at least some of the time on yourself. Have a break and re-charge the batteries. Spend quality time with friends and family that you don’t get to see much of during the year. Treat yourself by doing activities you enjoy that are not work related.

How will you be spending the holiday season? Will you be working on your business, will you take a complete break or will you do a combination of work and leisure?

Would love to hear your thoughts!
