As a fairly new business owner I am now appreciating the unique challenges that are faced by people running their own business. I always knew these challenges existed but never really understood the impact on the day-to-day life of small business owners until I faced those challenges myself.
People go into business because they have expertise in a certain area or a product they can offer to the world at large. The reality is you end up spending a lot of your time on a whole lot of other things that are crucial to keeping your business running and not on your area of expertise. After a while your initial enthusiasm is replaced with a feeling of being overwhelmed and wondering why you are doing what you are doing. This is a common feeling amongst new small business owners (and even people who have been in business for a long time).
A key to getting through this is to learn to let go of control and focus on what you are good at. Any task in your business that does not fall into your area of expertise should be outsourced to someone who can do it better and faster. Your time can be much better spent doing tasks that make you money such as servicing your clients and growing your business.
I have spent months trying to get a website off the ground for my business but in the end I realised that this is beyond me and I would never be able to get it right. All of that time wasted for no reward. So I bit the bullet and hired an expert to finish it off for me. Yes it will cost me money but what price do you put on your time and piece of mind? I can be assured that I will end up with a decent website and can focus my time on much better things such as servicing my current clients and growing my business. This decision will actually save me money in the long term.
It is much easier and less costly to outsource these days with a trend towards hiring contractors from overseas to do all sorts of jobs such as web design, virtual assistant, graphic design, data entry, email management and the list goes on. There are websites such as Fiverr and Upwork that specialise in pairing up professionals with projects. If you hate the idea of outsourcing overseas you can still hire a local person to do the work. It will be more costly than using overseas labour but you will still save in the long run.
The moral of the story is when in doubt hire an expert!
What areas of your business do you struggle with and how do you deal with it? Do you try and do it all yourself or do you bite the bullet and outsource?
